5-Amino-1MQ is used in the literature as a tool compound for nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) research. NNMT catalyses methylation of nicotinamide using S-adenosyl-L-methionine and is studied in cell and biochemical assay systems that track nicotinamide and 1-methylnicotinamide handling.

Work associated with Neelakantan, Watowich and colleagues describes small-molecule NNMT ligands, including 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium analogues, in enzyme-inhibition and metabolic-model papers. Those reports concern laboratory endpoints (enzyme activity, metabolite ratios, cultured-cell assays). They are experimental.

Related reviews place NNMT in NAD⁺-salvage and methyl-donor biochemistry. That pathway context explains why the compound appears in cofactor-research bibliographies. It does not convert this vial into an NAD-boost, weight-loss or metabolic medicine.
